Dan Heimiller

Dan Heimiller is the champion of Event 8, defeating a field of 171 entries to win the $360 six-max title. For his day’s work, Heimiller collected the black glass trophy and the top prize of $12,577. It was his second six-max victory in this building, five years after his win in the $2,160 version in 2011.

The champ is a professional poker player originally from Michigan, though he’s made his home in Las Vegas off and on for the last 30 years. He learned to play poker shortly after graduating college, and his tournament career has netted him nearly $6 million in total earnings to date. He also has two gold bracelets and a couple close calls in World Poker Tour events.

Heimiller showed up a couple hours into this event, and he wasted no time getting to work. By the time the dinner break hit, he was among the chip leaders, and he moved into the top spot by eliminating Arthur Rodriguez in seventh place. Heimiller went on to eliminate David Jackson in fourth place, then Matthew Yorra in third, setting up a heads-up duel against Zoltan Czinkota.

The final battle lasted just a couple hands before Czinkota ran ace-eight into Heimiller’s ace-king. A king on the turn left Czinkota dead to a chop, and a blank on the river sealed the deal for Heimiller.

“I gave more than my share of bad beats today,” Heimiller laughed as he reflected on his win. “Earlier in the tournament, I had queens and I busted aces.”

Heimiller said he almost left town after taking a bad beat of his own yesterday. “I was thinking about running out the door,” he said. The decision to stick around turned out to be a profitable one, though. “I’ll tell you what, $12,000 a day is…” he trailed off. “How much a year is that?”
