Jack Rolnitzky (standing, celebrating) knocks out David Maloney on the first hand
Jack Rolnitzky (standing, celebrating) knocks out David Maloney on the first hand

The returning players wasted no time lighting the fireworks after the restart and we had an all-in called on the first hand. Jack Rolnitzky opened from early position and David Maloney moved all-in to get a call from Rolnitzky.

Rolnitsky: AcKc
Maloney: JcJs

It was a first-hand race and Rolnitsky jumped out of his seat after he binked the As4c3c flop. Maloney was in bad shape after the flop and was drawing dead to 35th place when the turn came Tc. The river was a pointless 3h and Maloney was eliminated on the first hand back.

Jack Rolnitzky – 5,400,000 (45 bb)
David Maloney – Eliminated in 35th place ($4,065)

Rafael Reis (Kent, WA)
Rafael Reis (Kent, WA) returns for Day 3 with the chip lead

Eight starting flights and a long Day 2 were not enough to determine the winner of the record-setting opening tournament on the 2016 Seminole Hard Rock “Rock ‘N’ Roll Poker Open” schedule. The tournament drew 5,018 entrants to set a record for the biggest tournament field in Florida poker history and 35 players are still around with a chance at the title.

Former SHRP champion Rafael Reis returns with the chip lead but he has some tough competition ahead if he wants to earn top honors. He took the lead early in Day 2 but gave up to several different players but was back on top when they paused play midway through Level 31.

Everyone is guaranteed at least $4,065 but everyone is shooting for the top prize of $223,321 and the title of champion.

They are set to return at the top of the hour and play down until we have a winner.

Top ten returning stacks:

Rafael Reis – 7,325,000 (61 bb)
Allan Bieler – 6,745,000 (56 bb)
Barbaro Diaz – 5,505,000 (46 bb)

$360 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 31: 60,000/120,000 with a 20,000 Ante
Players Remaining: 35 of 5,018

Rafael Reis (Kent, WA)
Rafael Reis (Kent, WA)

From a starting field of more than 5,000 entries, just 35 players remain as Day 2 concludes.

Washington’s Rafael Reis leads the way, bagging up 7,325,000 chips to give him the big stack of more than 60 big blinds heading into Day 3. Allan Bieler is the nearest challenger with 6,745,000, followed by Barbaro Diaz (5,505,000), Perry Shiao (5,060,000), and Luis Yepez (4,965,000). The latter three shuffled in and out of the top spots all day long, while Bieler’s arrival on the leaderboard was sparked by a big, late double-up through David Prociak, who was the chip leader at the time.

Others who parlayed Day 2 big stacks into Day 3 appearances include Alvaro Jirau (3,345,000), Michael Johnson (3,230,000), Dustin Murphy (2,875,000), and Damjan Radanov (2,115,000). A complete list of the survivors’ chip counts can be found one post below this one.

Wally Maddah (Tampa, FL)
Wally Maddah (Tampa, FL)

Wally Maddah, on the other hand, never had a big stack with which to maneuver on Day 2, but that didn’t seem to pose much of a problem. The Seminole Hard Rock Poker Ambassador worked between five and eight big blinds for nearly the entire day before going on a bit of a late-night run. Maddah’s finishing stack of 1,290,000 puts him two from the bottom of the board, but nearly 11 big blinds should be plenty of ammunition tomorrow, if today was any indication.

The money bubble burst very early on Day 2, with the final 500 players earning shares of the record-setting prizepool of more than $1.5 million. Chino Rheem looked like he might make a run at it during the day’s middle stages, but he flamed out in the mid-hundreds with only a small profit to show for his work. Zo Karim, John Holley, and Jason Young were also among the casualties of the long day, along with Hard Rock Poker team members Sheddy Siddiqui, Darryll Fish, and Stewart Newman.

Everyone who is left is guaranteed to earn at least $4,065 on Monday, with the trophy and a top prize of more than $230,000 awaiting the winner. Play resumes at 2:00 PM with 20 minutes remaining in the level.

Event 1: Chris Laieta Triples Up on the Last Hand

$360 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 31: 60,000/120,000 with a 20,000 Ante
Players Remaining: 35 of 5,018

Chris Laieta (Howard Beach, NY)
Chris Laieta (Howard Beach, NY)

Chris Laieta opened to 250,000 under the gun, and the player next to act called. Devon Shalmi three-bet shoved for just over 2,000,000 total in position, and Michael Johnson called from the small blind. Laieta called all in too, putting himself at risk for his last 1,365,000.

Laieta: KdKh
Shalmi: As9c
Johnson: 9s9d

The AdJs4c flop gave Shalmi a big lead with a pair of aces, though the Qs on the turn gave Laieta a few extra catch-up outs with a Broadway draw. The river was the Ks, and Laieta let out a loud celebration at the sight of his winning set of kings. He tripled up, crippling Shalmi and taking a big dent out of Johnson in the process.

“That’s the first time I’ve celebrated at the poker table,” Laieta said apologetically, collecting his newfound big stack on the final hand of Day 2.

Chris Laieta – 4,645,000 (39 bb)
Michael Johnson – 3,230,000 (27 bb)
Devon Shalmi – 760,000 (6 bb)

Event 1: Three More Hands

$360 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 31: 60,000/120,000 with a 20,000 Ante
Players Remaining: 37 of 5,018

The clock was paused halfway through Level 31, and a card was drawn. It was a three, so each table will play that many more hands before the survivors bag up for the night.

A full recap of the day’s action and the Day 3 seat draw will be published shortly after the close of play.

Event 1: More For Michael Johnson

$360 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 31: 60,000/120,000 with a 20,000 Ante
Players Remaining: 38 of 5,018

Ted McNamara opened the cutoff to 250,000, and Julian Roman three-bet shoved for about 600,000 in the small blind. In the big, Michael Johnson re-shoved with his big stack, putting McNamara to the decision for the 2,700,000 or so he had behind. McNamara spent a couple minutes considering, long enough that he felt the need to apologize. Eventually, he surrendered, saying, “This is probably the nittiest fold ever, but…”

With McNamara out of the way, Roman was heads-up for his tournament life.

Roman: 6d9d
Johnson: Ad2h

McNamara was less than thrilled to see Johnson’s marginal holdings, but he no doubt felt better once he saw the 8d2s2c flop. “I’m the best!” he said. The Ac turn left Roman drawing dead to the 7d river, which completed the board meaninglessly. Johnson won the pot with deuces full, eliminating Roman in 38th place.

Michael Johnson – 4,700,000 (39 bb)
Julian Roman – Eliminated in 38th place ($3,688)

Event 1: Last Break

$360 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
End of Level 30: 50,000/100,000 with a 10,000 Ante
Players Remaining: 39 of 5,018

The final 39 players are on an abbreviated 10-minute break. When they return, they’ll play a partial level before the survivors bag up for the night.

Rafael Reis will begin the night’s final level with the chip lead, sitting with nearly 7,000,000 chips to set the pace at the moment.
