Nipun Java

It was always an ambitious goal to take this event from 609 players down to a winner in one day, and reality has finally hit in the wee hours of Monday morning. The clock has run out on Level 32 and on Day 2 as a whole, and the final 12 players will return Monday afternoon to play it out on an unscheduled Day 3.

Here’s the remaining lineup:

Table 1
Seat 1: David Shmuel – 2,500,000 (13 bb)
Seat 2: —empty—
Seat 3: Alfredo Guevara – 2,975,000 (15 bb)
Seat 4: Ross Ramlal – 1,200,000 (6 bb)
Seat 5: —empty—
Seat 6: Mike Mehallis – 10,625,000 (53 bb)
Seat 7: —empty—
Seat 8: Ana Freitas – 4,275,000 (21 bb)
Seat 9: Josh Robins – 6,450,000 (32 bb)

Table 2
Seat 1: Nipun Java – 14,925,000 (75 bb)
Seat 2: Manny Minaya – 2,750,000 (14 bb)

Seat 7: —empty—
Seat 8: Zach Donovan – 5,900,000 (30 bb)
Seat 9: Paulo Treu – 1,225,000 (6 bb)

Nipun Java tore though the later stages of Day 2, amassing nearly a quarter of the total chips in play before the clock stuck zero. His stack of 14,925,000 will be good for about 75 big blinds entering the final day.

Java, an Indian-born pro from California, is an accomplished tournament player with more than $2 million in live career earnings. A big chunk of the came this past summer when he claimed a pair of WSOP bracelets, first sharing the $1,000 Tag Team title and then winning the $1,000 online event outright. He’ll be a tough out for his 11 remaining opponents in this event, too.

Local standout Manny Minaya is also among the remaining field, as are one-time chip leaders Mike Mehallis and Zach Donovan. Ana Frietas is the last lady left and a former chip leader herself, and she’ll return to the tables in the middle of the pack.

Everyone left is guaranteed to earn at least $14,279 at this point, but none of them will likely be content with that result. The series’ opening trophy and the top prize of $272,508 are reserved for the eventual winner.

Day 3 begins at 2 p.m.

Nipun Java

It’s been a while since we’ve had a chance to update Event 1, and a lot has changed over the course of the last hour. The field is now just 13 players strong.

Nipun Java is primarily the one driving the action, and his chip stack has swollen as a result. Just a moment after eliminating Reinaldo Troconis with ace-king, Java played another big pot against Jonathan Snead.

Snead got himself all in for 2,170,000 before the flop, and Java re-shoved for more than 10 million behind him. When the rest of the table folded, Java showed down more of the same.

“Ace-king again?” Snead asked. Java nodded.

Snead: AdQc
Java: AhKc

The board ran out 5h3h2c7c2s, and the kicker played to earn Java another knockout pot. Snead was eliminated in 14th place, sending his chips over into Java’s already mighty stack.

The California pro now has more than 20 percent of the chips in play.

Nipun Java – 13,400,000 (89 bb)
Jonathan Snead – Eliminated

Event 1: Alfredo Guevara Doubles Through Ana Freitas

$570 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Payouts
Level 29: 50,000/100,000 with a 15,000 ante
Players Remaining: 20 of 3,173

Alfredo Guevara

Alfredo Guevara opened with a raise in early position, Mike Mehallis called a couple seats over, and Ana Freitas joined from the button to create three-way action.

The flop was Ad3c2s, and Guevara continued for what looked like 500,000. Mehallis quickly folded, but Freitas raised all in with the larger of the two stacks. Guevara had 1,305,000 chips behind his bet, and he eventually called all in to put himself at risk.

Guevara: AsKs
Freitas: AhJs

Guevara’s kicker had him poised for a double-up, and the 9d turn and 8s river secured the pot.

Alfredo Guevara – 4,700,000 (47 bb)
Ana Freitas – 900,000 (9 bb)

Event 1: Michael Gallo Eliminated in 23rd Place ($6584)

$570 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Payouts
Level 29: 50,000/100,000 with a 15,000 ante
Players Remaining: 23 of 3,173

Action folded around to the blinds, where Michael Gallo moved all in for 800,000 in the small and Reinaldo Troconis called to put him at risk from the big.

Gallo: Kc3s
Troconis: KsTs

The board ran out JsTh6c7c3c, and Troconis won the pot with a pair of tens, nearly doubling up in the process.

Gallo was eliminated in 23rd place.

Reinaldo Troconis – 1,995,000 (20 bb)
Michael Gallo – Eliminated

Event 1: Brian Powell Doubles Through Zach Donovan

$570 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)

Level 29: 40,000/80,000 with a 10,000 ante
Players Remaining: 26 of 3,173

Brian Powell

Tyler Rauh opened to 175,000 in early position, and Brian Powell three-bet shoved for 1,900,000 a couple seats over. On the button, Zach Donovan asked for the count before moving all in with his chip-leading stack.

“I’m glad I don’t have a decision to make,” Rauh said, quickly surrendering his cards into the muck to leave Powell heads-up for his tournament life.

Powell: JsJc
Donovan: KdKh

The board ran out Jd7h5c5h6s, and Powell flopped top set and turned jacks full to earn the come-from-behind double-up.

Brian Powell – 4,185,000 (52 bb)
Zach Donovan – 4,175,000 (52 bb)

Event 1: Zach Donovan Leads Final Three Tables
