Shawn Cunix Wins a Pot
Shawn Cunix (far right) bet the river, and his opponent (far left) called.

WPT Champions Shawn Cunix and Matthew Wantman are seated at the same table today, and Cunix is in his usual jovial mood for a Day 1 flight with a re-entry option.

At one point, Cunix told the table that he was providing so much entertainment that they should all be tipping him $10. Wantman pulled out a $10 bill and tossed it over to Cunix’s stack.

A few minutes later, Cunix raised from the button to 1,000, the small blind called, and Wantman called from the big blind.

The flop came 6d4h2s, and it checked to Cunix, who bet 2,200. The big blind folded, and then Cunix extended his open hand toward Wantman, as if he expected Wantman to call by paying him. Wantman called by putting 2,200 in chips in Cunix’s hand, and then Cunix dropped them on to the table so the dealer could bring them in.

The turn card was the Ah, Cunix bet 3,700, and once again he extended his open hand over to Wantman. But this time, Wantman folded and dropped his cards into Cunix’s hand, and Cunix then dropped them to the table. Cunix won the pot.

Matthew Wantman  –  39,000  (130 bb)

The next hand three players saw a flop of Kc8c8h, and the player in middle position bet 1,300. Cunix raised from the cutoff to 2,800, the player on the button folded, and the original bettor called.

The turn card was the Jh, his opponent checked, Cunix bet 4,400, and his opponent called.

The river card was the 10h, his opponent checked, Cunix bet 7,300, and his opponent thought for a while before he called.

Cunix showed KdQh to win the pot with two pair, kings and eights, and his opponent mucked.

This entire time, Cunix had been chatting and joking and having a good time.

After the hand, Wantman said, “I think $3,500 is too cheap for this much entertainment. That’s why I paid him the $10. $3,510 seems much more fair.”

Registration remains open until the start of Level 9 (around 9:15 pm). Players are allowed one entry and one re-entry per starting day (maximum of four entries).

There will be a 90-minute dinner break at the end of Level 6, around 5:30 pm, and action is scheduled to continue tonight until the end of Level 11, around 12:30 am.
