Event 11: Brian Hastings’ Book Club

$1,650 Purple Chip Bounty (Single Re-Entry)
Level 18: 2,000/4,000 with a 500 Ante
Players Remaining: 8 of 126

Brian Hastings opened the button to 10,000, and Raffaello Locatelli three-bet to 24,000 in the big blind. Hastings called.

The flop was KsJc5h. Locatelli stacked up 30,000 chips, put his hand behind the bet, then paused and checked. Hastings bet 17,000.

“You’re opening a restaurant?” Locatelli asked as he considered.

“A tea shop,” Hastings corrected him. With that, Locatelli called.

The turn was the 8d, and Locatelli led for 40,000. Hastings called. The river was the 2h, putting two pair on board. Locatelli checked, and Hastings moved all in for about 105,000. Locatelli had about 110,000 chips left in front of him, so the decision essentially represented his tournament life. He folded after just  few seconds, and Hastings tabled JsTh as the dealer pushed him the pot.

A conversation followed, during which Locatelli dodged disclosing the contents of his hand and Hastings tried to explain where it went wrong for his opponent. “I got a Christmas gift idea for you,” Hastings said at one point. “Mike Caro’s Book of Tells. There’s another one by Joe Navarro too.”

Brian Hastings – 273,000 (68 bb)
Raffaello Locatelli – 110,000 (28 bb)

Event 11: Aaron Massey Eliminated in 9th Place ($3,024)

Aaron Massey
Aaron Massey

Aaron Massey raised to 7,000 and Patrick Eskandar, who started off Day 2 with a double through Brian Hastings, called from middle position. Raffaello Locatelli was in the small blind and came along. The trio saw a flop of 9d6s6d. Locatelli checked and Massey bet 12,000. Eskandar called while Locatellit got out of the way.

Massey and Eskandar were heads up to the 2d turn. Massey cut down his stack revealing 40,100 chips. He promptly announced “Forty thousand five hundred,” leaving himself a lone 500 chip behind. Eskandar called.

The dealer burned and Massey casually plopped his final 500 in the pot before the 6h was turned. Eskandar called.

“Let’s go,” Massey said flipping over 8s8d for sixes-full. Eskandar turned over Th9h for a better fullhouse and took the pot. Massey was eliminated in 9th place good for a score of $3,024.

Patrick Eskandar – 286,000 (95 bb)
Aaron Massey – Eliminated in 9th place ($3,024)

Event 11: Alex Haber Plants a Jamaican Flag in Hollywood

2016 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open
Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Hollywood
Event #11
$360 No-Limit Hold’em Black Chip Bounty
Total Entries: 305
Total Prizepool: $61,000

Alex Haber
Alex Haber

Alex Haber is the champion of Event 11 at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown. Haber bested a field of 305 entries in the $360 Black Chip Bounty, winning the trophy and the top prize of $10,936 in a three-way deal.

The champ is a 49-year-old part-time player from Kingston, Jamaica.  By day, he sells car parts and kitchen fittings. By night, he’s a poker player, and he’s amassed a few significant results in his short tournament career. Haber cashed in the WSOP Main Event this past summer, and he came close to winning an LAPT Main Event title two years ago. His total career tournament earnings are nearing $200,000 after this result.

This one-day event began Sunday at noon, and it looked for a while that it might not play out. By the time the clock struck 5:00 a.m., there were still three players battling furiously for the trophy. The idea of making a deal had come up a handful of times over the course of the final table, but the players had been unable to come to terms to that point.

Eventually, though, the fatigue began to set in, and the final three players were content to chop up the prize money and call it a night around 5:30. Haber had the chip lead, so each of his two opponents added $250 from their own shares of the otherwise-even chop.

“I got lucky,” Haber said in the moments after his win. Luck may have played a role, but Haber certainly showed his chops. This result was his fourth five-figure cash in the last three years.
