Manny Minaya

Other than a straight buy-in, there were a few other ways to get a seat into the WPT RRPO Championship. There were a ton of satellites but also a few tournaments which added a seat to the winner.

Last night we ran the one-day $150 Big Stack trophy event, one of those tournaments with the added seat, and Manny Minaya walked away with the title in the early morning hours. The Tampa regular has a couple of Winter Poker Open titles in our sister room on the west coast of the state then picked up his first SHRP title along with the Championship seat.

Day 1B Entries:  178

Day 1B of the Championship hit 178 entries shortly after the start of Level 2 to put a combined 625 into the headline tournament. That is good enough to put the prize pool right at $2,000,000 but it won’t stop there.

With registration open until 9:15 pm, the next milestone with be hitting a $2,500,000 prize pool later this afternoon.

Steve Trizis

The Championship continues to move its way towards the magic number to reach a $2,000,000 prize pool and more than a few of our loyal regulars are in the game.

Among the early crowd, we found Steve Trizis, Erik Christensen, Howard Mash, Evan Teitelbaum, and Nigel Murray to name a few.

Eric Afriat

Day 1B might push the Championship over the $2,000,000 prize pool mark even before we reach the afternoon hours. We can see it on the horizon and as players continue to make their way to the Seminole Ballroom.

Two early entrants have plenty of success in our tournament. Eric Afriat put his name on the Champions Cup the first time with a WPT Poker Showdown win in 2014 and almost pulled off a WPT first in the spring.

No player has ever won the same WPT event twice (others have done it at the same property, but not the same event) and Afriat had a chance to do that when he made the WPT Poker Showdown final table in April. He fell short, finishing in second place to James Carroll, but he earned another big payday.

Brian Altman also owns SHRP Championship, he lifted a big trophy with a WPT Lucky Hearts Poker Open Championship title in 2015. In addition to that victory, Altman also owns four other SHRP titles to put him in a five-way tie for the most wins (David Prociak leads with seven).

Jason Wandling
Jason Wandling leads after Day 1A

Day 1A of the WPT RRPO Championship had a great turnout, beating the opening flight numbers from last year with 447 entries. That leaves the field only 178 away from matching the $2,000,000 guaranteed prize pool and pushing it further up.

There were 176 players booking a seat into Day 2 on Sunday with Jason Wandling leading and 2014 WPT Lucky Hearts Poker Open Champion James Caldarero not far behind.

Today’s schedule of play is the same as Day 1A. Players will start with 40,000 stacks and blind levels last 60 minutes for the first two days, jumping to 90 on Day 3. Late registration and unlimited re-entries are available until the start of Level 9 at 9:15 pm with a dinner break after Level 6 at 5:30 pm.

Meeting the guarantee is a sure thing, the race will be against last year’s total number for our first WPT RRPO Championship.
