Event 1: Ortiz Dodges Disaster

$560 Buy-In Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 14: Blinds 1,200/2,400/300 ante

A player in early position raises to 11,500, Michael Ortiz calls from the hijack, and both players in the blinds call to see a flop of AcQc2d.

The player in the small blind leads out for 20,000, getting folds from the player in the big blind and the preflop raiser. Before Ortiz acts on his hand, though, the player in the small blind turns over his own cards, AdQs for top two pair.

With a smile on his face, Ortiz takes one last look at his cards and folds AsKd face up.

“I cost myself a lot of money on that one,” says the player in the small blind.

“I had a funny feeling you had ace-queen anyway,” replies Ortiz.

Despite losing the pot, Ortiz dodges what could have been a big loss and is still going strong with about 289,000.

Level 10: Blinds 500/1,000/100 ante

Picking up the action after a flop of 8s6c3c with about 15,000 in the pot, Michael Ortiz is in the tank after his opponent moves all in for roughly 21,000. After a little while Ortiz calls with AsKs, leading his opponent’s Ac5c.

Ortiz fades his opponent’s outs as the Kd turn and 7h river secure the pot for him with a pair of kings, increasing his stack to a tournament leading 220,000.
