Jerry Wong

Back out among the tables, we noticed that David Dowdy was no longer over a million and down quite a bit to 260,000. It looks like most of the damage was done by Jerry Wong (who doubled his short stack earlier) and now leads with 1,130,000.

James Calderaro is also having a good time as players drop around him and up to 897,000 as the pay jumps increase.

Event 1: Nigel Murray Leads; Three Over One Million

$400 Deep Stack No-Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Structure | Payouts

Nigel Murray

A quick walk among the tables on break found three players with stacks in seven-digit territory.

Nigel Murray began the day eighth out of 614 players but now sits at the top with 1,182,000. Not far behind is David Dowdy who began the day in third place and now only a few chips behind Murray with 1,175,000. Eddy Gibbs came into Day 2 with the chip lead and still doing just fine with 1,094,000.

Blinds are up to 5,000/10,000 with a 10,000 ante and the average stack is about 292,000 (29 bb).

2022 Tampa Winter Poker Open Schedule

Event 1: Jerry Wong Doubles

$400 Deep Stack No-Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Structure | Payouts
Level 18:  4,000/8,000 with a 8,000 ante
Players Remaining:  455 of 6,134

With the flop reading AhJhJd and about 50K in the pot, Jerry Wong moved all in for 160,000 from the big blind and his opponent on the button called after a short think.

Wong: Jc8s
Button: 8h5h

Wong was ahead with his flopped trip jacks and needed to fade a heart to double up. The Td turn was harmless and the Kd river sent him the double.

Wong, the former WSOP November Niner, has some experience winning these big opening events. He won Event 1 of the 2017 LHPO series for a cool $250,000.

Jerry Wong – 370,000 (46 bb)

Event 1: Gili Simon and Sebastian Gallego Eliminated by Lester Rainey

$400 Deep Stack No-Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Structure | Payouts
Level 17:  3,000/6,000 with a 6,000 ante
Players Remaining:  579 of 6,134

Gili Simon was eliminated in 581st place

Gili Simon open-shipped for 64,000 from early position, and Lester Rainey called next to act. It folded around to Sebastian Gallego in the small blind, and he moved all in for 104,000. Soma Gubacsi thought about coming along in the big blind but folded his hand. Rainey thought for a minute and called the extra amount.

“Oh no,” Simon said when she saw Gallego’s hand.

Gallego: KdKh
Simon: QsQc
Rainey: AdJc

It looked like a cooler for Simon but it turned into a tough beat for the big pairs when Rainey paired his ace on the AhTdTs flop. The board finished with 3h turn and 8d river and Rainey sent Simon and Gallego out early in the day.

Lester Rainey – 448,000 (75 bb)
Sebastian Gallego – Eliminated in 580th Place ($810)
Gili Simon – Eliminated in 581st Place ($810)
