Dan Shak

Dan Shak raised under the gun to 25,000, and Chris Hunichen called from the cutoff.

Both players checked to the turn on a board of KsJc3h5d, Shak bet 30,000, and Hunichen called.

The river card was the 9d, Shak bet 80,000, and Hunichen thought for a while before betting enough to put Shak all in.

Shak quickly called all in for 202,000, saying they might have the same hand. Hunichen said, “Not if you have the nuts.”

Shak showed Qh10h for the nuts — a king-high straight. Hunichen turned over Kh9h for two pair, and Shak won the pot to double up in chips.

Dan Shak – 539,000  (54 bb)
Chris Hunichen  –  135,000  (14 bb)

Before that hand, Hunichen was telling the table the story of how he won his seat in the satellite here at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Late in the satellite, James Calderero had the chip lead, and Hunichen was second in chips. Calderaro raised preflop, and Hunichen called with pocket queens, saying he’d normally reraise in the spot, but he didn’t see the need to play a big pot against the only player who could bust him.

The flop came 9x9x3x, and one of the other players slammed the table and said something like, “Y’all are lucky I folded,” which seemed like a pretty good tell that he had folded a nine. Calderaro and Hunichen both checked. The turn card was a Jx, and they checked again.

The river card was a Qx, giving Hunichen top full house. He bet, and Calderaro shoved with pocket jacks. Ouch. That gave Hunichen a huge chip lead, and he went on to win his seat into this event.
