WPTDeepStacks: Mukul Pahuja Leads 64 Day 1A Survivors

Day 1A chip leader Mukul Pahuja

At the end of 15 levels of play, the first of two starting flights for the WPTDeepStacks is in the books and the 314 entries was trimmed down to just 64.

Mukul Pahuja bagged up the heaviest of all the bags and leads the 64 survivors with 384,000. One of the voices of the WPT, Tony Dunst, finished right behind him in second with 356,500. Ryan Tamanini (317,000), Carlos Vazquez (316,000) and Carlos Guerrero (218,000) round out the top Day 1A counts.

Other notables to survive the day include Marie Harrell, Dylan Drazen, John Dolan, Spencer Champlin, Peter Walsworth, Sean Shah, Neil Blumenfield, Aaron Massey, Nipun Java, Sheddy Siddiqui, Scott Stewart, Vincent Moscati, Jason Gooch, James Gilbert and Christian Harder.

The 64 survivors will return on Wednesday for Day 2 with blinds of 1,500/3,000 and a 500 ante. They will merge with the survivors of Day 1B, which gets underway on Tuesday at noon.

WPTDeepStacks: Scott Baumstein Doubles Through Derek Bowers

On a flop of TsTh3h, Derek Bowers checked from the big blind and Scott Baumstein bet 12,700 from the hijack. Bowers check-raised to 32,500 and Baumstein took a few moments before moving all in for about 50,000.  Bowers called.

Bowers showed Ah7h and needed a heart to fill the nut flush draw. Baumstein showed JsTd and flopped trips.

The turn was the 5d and the river was the 6d. Baumstein’s trip tens held up to double up with about 20 minutes left in the day.

There were two empty seats and Mukul Pahuja was stacking up a massive pile of chips.

According to other players at the table, Nick Palma raised to 4,500 from under the gun and Pahuja three-bet to 12,500 out of the small blind. Harold Evans called in the big blind and Palma moved all in for 46,000.

Pahuja called and Evans moved all in for about 150,000. Pahuja called that too and all three hands were exposed.

Pahuja showed AxAx and was in a great spot against Evans’ AxKx and Palma’s JxJx.

The board ran out 9x8x3x7x3x and Pahuja won the pot to vault into the chip lead with the day winding down.

Oleksandr Vaserfirer raised from the cutoff and David Prociak three-bet out of the small blind. Vaserfirer called and the flop was Qh6d2c.

Prociak moved all in for about 20,000 and Vaserfirer snap-called. Prociak showed Ks7h and was in trouble against Vaserfirer’s Qd7d.

Prociak needed a king on the turn or river, but bricked off and was eliminated about halfway through the level. The former Seminole Hard Rock Poker Player of the Year will have another shot at this event tomorrow.

Sean Shah raised to 3,400 on the button and the player in the small blind moved all in for about 25,000. The big blind folded and Shah snap-called.

Shah was in great shape with his TdTh against the small blind’s As3s.

The board ran out KdQh2h4cQd and Shah’s pair held up to take the pot and eliminate a player. He’s one of the bigger stacks in the tournament.
