Day 1A of the $1,100 WPTDeepStacks Main Event came to an end with 86 players remaining, and the big stack belongs to Nathan Grow who bagged up 730,000 (183 big blinds). Ilan Shachar is the only other player to bag at least 500K, and Shachar bagged exactly 500,000 (125 big blinds).

Here are the top five chip stacks to survive Day 1A:

1.  Nathan Grow  –  730,000  (183 bb)
2.  Ilan Shachr  –  500,000  (125 bb)
3.  Jacobo Milhem  –  384,000  (96 bb)
4.  Roberto Schmeda  –  351,000  (88 bb)
5.  Joshua Hillock  –  347,000  (87 bb)

Grow’s key pot shortly after the last break of the night, when he and William Jordan had two of the top three stacks in the field. Jordan raised, Grow reraised, and Jordan four-bet shoved for about 300K. Grow called with KxKx, and Jordan turned over QxQx. The best hand held up, and that catapulted Grow to about 600K.

The full list of official chip counts will be posted later tonight, and Day 1B begins tomorrow (Friday) at 12:00 noon.

At the last break, two of the top three chip stacks were seated side-by-side at Table 25 — Nathan Grow and William Jordan.

Well, it seems they tangled in a pretty big pot last level, because now Jordan is gone and Grow has about 600K in chips for a huge chip lead.

Nathan Grow  –  600,000  (240 bb)
William Jordan  –  Eliminated

At another table, Robert Constable was all in under the gun for 18,500 with AdKc, and he needed it to hold to stay alive against the AcQd of the player on the button.

The board came JsJc8h4c9s, and Constable won the pot with his king kicker to double up in chips.

The players return from break to begin Level 13, with increased blinds of 1,000-2,000 and a big-blind ante of 2,000. With 144 players remaining, the average chip stack is about 92,500 (46 big blinds).

A scan of the field during the break turned up four players with at least 280K in chips, creating an unofficial leaderboard:

1.  Ilan Shachar  –  329,000  (165 bb)
2.  William Jordan  –  303,000  (152 bb)
3.  Nathan Grow  –  286,000  (143 bb)
4.  Eric Von Guttenberg  –  280,000  (140 bb)

Just as we found Nathan Grow sitting on a chipleading stack around 315K, the player in the hijack moved all in for 6,100, and Grow called from the button. Kenneth Bruno thought for a while in the big blind before he also called.

Bruno and Grow both checked to the river on a board of AdQc10d5h6d, and all three players turned over their cards.

Nathan Grow:  Kh8d  (king high)
Kenneth Bruno:  KcQh  (pair of queens)
Hijack:  9s8s  (nine high)

Bruno won the pot with his pair of queens to eliminate the player in the hijack. Grow lost the hand, but is still above 300K in chips.

After a flop of As10h9s, The player in the cutoff was all in for 15,600 with KsQs (spade flush draw with a gutshot straight draw), and he needed to improve to stay alive against Julian Wohlgemuth’s AdQd (pair of aces).

The turn card was the 7c, the river card was the 7d, and Wohlgemuth won the pot with two pair, aces and sevens, to eliminate his opponent.

Julian Wohlgemuth  –  150,000  (94 bb)

At a nearby table, the player in the cutoff limps, Jacobo Milhem completes the small blind, and Anthony Zinno raises from the big blind. The cutoff called, and Milhem folded.

Both players checked to the turn on a board of JhJd9d9h, Zinno bet 6,000, the cutoff raised to 16,000, and Zinno called.

The river card was the 5h, Zinno checked, the cutoff bet 22,000, and Zinno tanked for a while before he called. His opponent quickly mucked his cards, and Zinno won the pot without showing his hand.

Anthony Zinno  –  114,000  (71 bb)

Two hands later, Edgar Varas moved all in from UTG+1, a player called from middle position, and Anthony Zinno moved all in from the button, covering both players. The middle-position player folded.

Varas turned over Ac10s, and he needed to improve to stay alive against Zinno’s JsJd.

The board came Ah9s9c10c6h, and Varas paired his ace on the flop and his ten on the turn to win the pot with two pair and double up in chips.

Edgar Varas  –  48,500  (30 bb)
Anthony Zinno  –  99,000  (62 bb)

His opponent turned over 5s5c, and needed to improve to stay alive.

The board came Kc9h7s8cAh — the UTG+1 player turned a gutshot straight draw, but improved no further. Milhem won the pot to eliminate his opponent and increase his chip lead to about 265K.
