Championship Day 1B: Joseph Cheong Bags the Overall Chip Lead

Day 1B of the $5,250 SHRPO Championship drew 413 entries, setting the total field size at 809. The prize pool is set at $3,923,650 and the final 102 players will finish in the money. A min-cash pays $7,925, while first place is worth $698,175.

Bagging the largest stack of the 132 survivors on Day 1B was Joseph Cheong. He bagged 514,000 and will carry the overall chip lead of the 270 total players remaining into Day 2.

Cheong and Tom Boivin were far and away the chip leaders in the final stretch of the day, but Cheong scored a late elimination when his flush draw cracked Sheddy Siddiqui’s kings to eclipse the half-million chip mark. Boivin is second in chips with 476,500.

Championship: 2003 WSOP Main Event Reunion

The poker world changed in the summer of 2003. An accountant named Chris Moneymaker from Georgia won his way into the WSOP Main Event that year via an $86 online satellite.

Moneymaker went on to make the final table and battled with Sammy Farha heads-up for the most coveted prize in poker. He defeated Farha, won the WSOP Main Event bracelet, and created a poker boom that is still in existence.

Today those two had a reunion in the Event Center.

Moneymaker played and bagged a big stack in Flight A of the SHRPO Championship and Farha is playing this evening. The two spent a few minutes catching up between hands and it was a special moment this evening.

Eric Harkins from Image Masters was the official WSOP photographer in 2003 and he captured all the action. Today, he was present once again and was able to document the two of them together.

A player raised from the button to 4,000, Sean Remz reraised from the small blind to 11,500, and the layer in the big blind moved all in for 34,500.

The player on the button tanked for a very long time before he folded, and Remz called fairly quickly with . The big blind turned over , and needed his aces to hold to stay alive.

The board came — Remz paired his eight on the flop and rivered a nine-high straight to win the pot and eliminate his opponent.

After the hand, Remz implied that he would have folded if the player on the button hadn’t taken so long to think, but Remz considered the entire situation and decided to call.

Remz final tabled the big field of Event 1 ($600 Deep Stack No-Limit Hold’em) earlier this series, finishing fifth to earn $109,320.

Dominique Mosley raised from under the gun was called by three players before Kai McCue-Unciano three-bet to 17,000 from the big blind. Mosley four-bet to 40,000, the three flatters folded and McCue-Unciano tanked for a bit before he five-bet shoved for about 190,000. Mosley called all in after a few moments for 187,500.
