Rhynie Campbell

Longtime fans of the game might be familiar with the name Rhynie Campbell. Back in 2007, Cambell, a casino owner from Turks and Caicos, invited the World Poker Tour to his native island. Four days after the $7,500 event began, he was sitting alone at the table, posing for winner’s photos after outlasting a field of 173 entries to win his first major title. The victory was worth well over $400,000 and a seat to the WPT Championship, where he also finished in the money.

Campbell picked up one more cash a year later before falling off the poker map for more than seven years. Last August, though, he showed up at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood, now the home casino for the new Miami resident. He cashed in one event there, then another one here this past April, and he’s returned this week for the opening event of the 2017 Open.

Things are going rather well so far, too. After winning a sizable pot against Jewook Oh and eliminating another player a moment later, Campbell got himself involved in a pot against Matthew Yorra.

Action began with Campbell limping from middle position, and the button joined for the minimum, as well. Yorra raised to 1,200 from the small blind, and both opponents called.

The flop was Ks9h7s. Yorra continued for 2,000, and Campbell was the only called. The turn was the Ts, and Yorra checked. Campbell bet 5,000, putting Yorra to a decision for a significant chunk of his remaining stack.

As Yorra squirmed in his chair, Campbell spoke. “I really want to you see it,” he said at one point. “But there’s only one way.” He held an extra chip over the pot as he spoke, indicating he was ready to stand his ground against any further resistance.

The two men traded some light-hearted conversation for another minute or two before Yorra surrendered his cards into the muck, flashing the Kc as he did. Campbell flashed his own Qs as he collected the pot.

Rhynie Campbell – 51,000
Matthew Yorra – 12,500
