The May Deep Stack Poker Series had three multi-day tournaments on the schedule, each one deeper than the next. The middle version had a fantastic crowd over the three-day run and it came to an end early in the morning when Chanpiseth Keam took the title along with $37,991 plus a seat in the $1,650 Deepest Stack Main Event.
The tournament drew 417 entries over the two starting flights and then had another 15 buy in before the start of Day 2. They combined to create a prize pool worth $216,000 which was well clear of the $150,000 Guarantee. Only 79 players were able to bag chips at the end of their opening flight.
Combined with the Day 2 buy ins, that left 94 players competing for the title on Day 2 with Heitor Saraiva and Larry Klur returning as the two biggest stacks. The day did not go well for Klur as the SHRP regular crashed out early but Saraiva was able to ride his lead into the money.
The tournament quickly played down towards the final table despite the deep stacks and slow, 90-minute level structure. The final table formed with the last ten players holding an average stack of 86 big blinds.
That was when the tournament went into grind mode.
It took three hours to lose our ninth place finisher when Nick Avena went out on a tough beat. They were losing one player per 90-minute level at one point until the dam broke. Saraiva went out in eighth with Haris Hadziabdic and Haig Toogerman on his heels.
Chris Thompson busted in fifth place and the last four players battled for another few hours until Zach Mullennix was knocked out by Julio Fernandez in fourth place.
The last three players held relatively similar stacks but Keam was ahead of the other two. It took very little time for the three remaining players to reach an agreement to chop up the remaining prize pool.
Keam took first place honors followed by Fernandez and Seth Gilson, making his second big final table of the series after a fourth-place finish in Event 1.
