Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open
Event 5: $150 No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
August 18-20, 2014
Entries: 2,159
Prize Pool: $250,090
RECAP
The ballroom was quiet at 1am but there were two big tournaments playing down to a winner. Event 5 was a small buy-in, big field tournament and the last man standing in the end was Boca Raton’s Alan Goodman.
The $150 No Limit Hold’em tournament kept the ballroom packed with six flights over two days. The event drew 2,159 players to create a $259,090 prizepool and paying out the top 126 spots. TJ Shulman came blasting out of the gates, moving his Flight 1A starting 12k stack over 100k before the first break and ending the initial flight with over 400k. Dinh Nguyen would be the overall chipleader after all six flights and the only other players over 400,000
Only 492 of the 2,159 starting players survived to make Day 2 and they played down to the money bubble in just a few hours. It looked like Iryna Ostapchuk would be the bubble girl but instead ended with 126th place money after all was counted.
Angel Vu continued to build her points lead in the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Player of the Year with another cash. The pace of play quickened after the money bubble and there was a steady line at the payout desk, soon players could see the big money at the end of the tournament.
Nguyen was unable to maintain his Day 1 momentum and had to battle throughout the day just to survive. TJ Shulman went in the other direction in the early stages of Day 2 but dropped back to the pack when his Kings were cracked. Both players were around for the redraw at 27 players and again for the final ten. Cesar Fuentes found his stride late in the day and was the man to catch near the end.
Players began talking about a chop with 18 remaining, a remarkable feat in the poker world, and some continued the conversation after each elimination. They began again in earnest when they formed the unofficial final table at ten players before TJ Shulman’s day came to a close.
Shulman ran into the pocket Queens of Andres Morales to bust out in 10th just before the break. When the final table players returned, it was a very serious conversation about making a deal to chop up the remaining prizepool. Alan Goodman, Denian Costa, Gaston Miculitzki, and Cesar Fuentes had the lion’s share of chips and weren’t happy with the thought of a completely even chop.
Everyone eventually worked out a deal giving those four players $19,000 and dividing the money equally between the remaining five. Andres Morales, Alex Bergfors, Stuart Paterson, Dinh Nguyen, and Marshall White each collect $17,493 for their time. They were all happy with their return on investment.
East coast regular Alan Goodman had the most chips at the time of the deal, less than two big blinds more than Denian Costa, and was crowned Champion of Event 5 along with the trophy and all the points which go along with the title. This is Goodman’s third career tournament win with two Borgata Winter Open victories to his credit.
