Sean Perez

In the first level after the dinner break, with the blinds at 1,500-2,500, Sean Perez had been knocked down to just 3,500 in chips — less than one-and-a-half big blinds. That was with about 24-25 players remaining, when the payouts were $560-$630.

Now, with eight players remaining, Perez raised from the button to 24,000, Salvatore Spina called from the small blind, and chipleader Stuart Young moved all in from the big blind.

Perez thought for a while before he called all in for 234,000, and Spina quickly folded.

Perez turned over QsQh, and he needed it to hold to stay alive against Young’s Ad9c.

The board came Kc10s8dKs6d, and the pocket queens held up for Perez to win the pot and double up in chips.

Sean Perez  –  502,000  (50 bb)

Perez had been down to the figurative chip-and-a-chair with about 25 players left, and now he’s knocking on the door of a final table with 50 big blinds.

With eight players remaining, the average chip stack is about 407,000 (41 big blinds), and the remaining players are all guaranteed to earn at least $2,190 each.

After a flop of 10d8h4d, Antti Halme checked the big blind, Lunique Petiote bet 20,000 from the cutoff, and Halme called.

The turn card was the Ad, and both players checked.

The river card was the Qd, putting four diamonds on the board, and Halme bet 75,000. Petiote tanked for a very long time, at one point saying, “This is so sick.”

Eventually, Petiote called, and Halme said, “Nice call,” as he mucked his cards to forfeit the pot. Petiote showed AhAc for a set of aces as he pulled in the pot.

Lunique Petiote  –  335,000  (56 bb)
Antti Halme  –  98,000  (16 bb)

Darryl Wettlaufer

A short while later, Darryl Wettlaufer raised under the gun to 16,000, and Halme called from the big blind.

The flop came Jh10c7c, Halme checked, Wettlaufer bet 23,000, and Halme check-raised all in for about 85,000.

Wettlaufer called with AhAc for an overpair, and Halme turned over KdQd for an open-ended straight draw. Halme needed to improve to stay alive.

The turn card was the 2c, the river card was the 4d, and the aces held up for Wettlaufer to win the pot and eliminate Halme in 12th place.

Darryl Wettlaufer  –  345,000  (58 bb)
Antti Halme  –  Eliminated in 12th Place  ($1,320)

After the hand, Lunique Petiote pointed out that Wettlaufer had the same two aces (ace of hearts and ace of clubs) that Petiote had against Halme. Coincidentally, Blake Whittington also had the exact same two aces when he doubled up a short while earlier at the other table.

With 11 players remaining, the average chip stack is about 296,000 (49 big blinds), and the remaining players are all guaranteed to earn at least $1,320 each.

After a flop of Jh8h3d, Salvatore Spina bet 17,000 from the big blind, Blake Whittington moved all in from the cutoff for 73,000, and Spina called with KcJc for a pair of jacks.

Whittington turned over AhAc for an overpair, and needed his hand to hold to stay alive.

The turn card was the 4d, the river card was the 9c, and Whittington’s aces held up for him to win the pot and double up in chips.

Blake Whittington  –  180,000  (30 bb)
Salvatore Spina  –  265,000  (44 bb)

With 12 players remaining, the average chip stack is about 271,000 (45 big blinds), and the remaining players are all guaranteed to earn at least $1,320 each.
