Event 1: Brian Gelrod Doubles; Big Stacks Growing

Level 20: 6,000/12,000 with a 8,000 ante
Players Remaining: 171 of 3,064

Brian Gelrod

Brian Gelrod began his day near the bottom of the counts, returning to only 32,500 after starting the tournament with a 20,000 stack. But now he’s deep into the money and getting more chips.

He open-shoved for 101,000 from the cutoff and found a call in the small blind. Gelrod’s AdTs was in good shape against Ah8h and stayed that way on the JcTc5s8c6c run out.

In other stack news, the lead switched one more time and it looks like Jay Romano is now on top with 1,460,000 followed by Tom Nguyen’s 1,335,000. Raman Afanasenka continues to climb and sits with 1,200,000.

Catching up on the fast-moving payout action, we are down to 230 players (or less depending on the current timing of typing) with some notables making a trip to the payout desk. Loni Harwood, Ian Casey, Ryan Welsh, Marc Sachelli, Joshua Wasserman, and Nancy Birnbaum were a few of those cashing but falling short of the big money up top.

Event 1: Tom Nguyen Clears One Million

$570 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Payouts
Level 18: 4,000/8,000 with a 8,000 ante
Players Remaining: 230 of 3,064

Tom Nguyen

Raman Afanasenka was the big stack in the room for only a few minutes. SHR Tampa regular Tom Nguyen took a big leap forward when he sent Matthew Kuba and Michael Lipman out on the same hand.

Nguyen jumped over a million and now sits with 1,241,000 as the chip leader.

Event 1: Raman Afanasenka Leads; Jay Romano Closing

$570 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Payouts
Level 18: 4,000/8,000 with a 8,000 ante
Players Remaining: 250 of 3,064

Raman Afanasenka

The blue 100K chips are now in play, making the stacks more manageable and big stacks are much easier to spot.

The biggest at the break belonged to Raman Afanasenka who began the day with 184,000 but now sits with 860,000 after two hours. That is good enough for the chip lead with Jay Romano’s 725,000 putting him in second place. Frederic Norman is also sitting nicely with 701,000 as post-money play continues.

Jay Romano

Event 1: David Pain Eliminated by Dan Heimiller

$570 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Payouts
Level 17: 3,000/6,000 with a 6,000 ante
Players Remaining: 270 of 3,064

Dan Heimiller

Shortly before the first break, Dan Heimiller was in a battle of the blinds against David Pain for a pot worth approximately 500,000. The money was in preflop and Heimiller was dominated.

Pain: KsKd
Heimiller: AdJd

Heimiller ran into a monster but quickly turned it around when he flopped the nut flush on the Td9d2d board. The 4s turn and 6c river finished the hand, Pain was eliminated, and Heimiller built a huge castle.

Dan Heimiller – 546,000
David Pain – Eliminated

Event 1: No Bubble Play Needed

$570 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Payouts
Level 17: 3,000/6,000 with a 6,000 ante
Players Remaining: 300 of 3,064

With the money bubble approaching, tournament staff instructed dealers to shout it out if they lost a player and to hold up the action when their hand was complete. With 34 tables in action, we lost a player in the middle of the room during that time.

After a quick double check, they announced that 300 players were remaining and all were in the money without the process of going into hand-for-hand mode.

We did not see the standard slowdown near the money bubble and we expect the pace to continue moving into the early stages of payouts.

Event 1: Jeff Kessler Eliminated by Frederic Norman

$570 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Payouts
Level 17: 3,000/6,000 with a 6,000 ante
Players Remaining: 311 of 3,064

Jeff Kessler

Frederic Norman opened the action and Jeff Kessler three-bet shoved for his last 60,000. Stephen Ma thought about coming along in the big blind but mucked before Norman called.

Norman: AcAs
Kessler: JhJd

It was a cooler for the former SHRP Seniors Event champ and he couldn’t find a comeback on the KhQc6c8sKd board to exit short of the money.

Frederic Norman – 355,000
Jeff Kessler – Eliminated

Event 1: Michael Kopjanski More Than Doubles; Eliminates Josh Beckley

$570 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Payouts
Level 16: 2,500/5,000 with a 5,000 ante
Players Remaining: 351 of 3,064

Michael Kopjanski

Josh Beckley open-shoved for 35,000 and Michael Kopjanski moved all in from the cutoff for approximately 142,000. Anna Antimony folded her button and Toby Boas called in the small blind for the three-way all in pot.

Beckley: Ac2h
Kopjanski: TcTd
Boas: AdKd

Beckley, the former November Niner, was in trouble and his paired deuce on the Th8c2d flop meant little compared to Kopjanski’s set. Beckley and Boas were drawing thin and then drawing dead after the 6h turn.

Beckley was eliminated and Kopjanski pulled a full double through Boas.

Michael Kopjanski – 309,000
Josh Beckley – Eliminated

Event 1: Adam Levy Eliminated by Howard Mash

$570 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)
$1,000,000 Guaranteed | Payouts
Level 15: 2,000/4,000 with a 4,000 ante
Players Remaining: 468 of 3,064

Howard Mash

In a battle of the blinds, Howard Mash four-bet shoved from the small blind and Adam Levy called at risk in the big blind for 47,000.

Mash: As3s
Levy: Kc9h

Mash was ahead for the knockout but Levy paired the Kd4c2s flop. Levy’s glimpse at a double up was short-lived when Mash hit the Ah turn to take the lead. The river Qs was no help to Levy and he was an early exit on Day 2.

Howard Mash – 115,500
Adam Levy – Eliminated
