Sunday, August 11: A Summary of the Other Prelims

While Event 1 busted hundreds of players on Sunday, August 11 at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open there was a lot of other poker action taking place throughout the ballroom complex at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Here is a quick look at what took place in the four other preliminary events that ran on Sunday.

Event 2 ($1,100 no-limit hold’em – $75,000 guaranteed) attracted a field of 98 players to create a prize pool worth $98,000. This tournament attracted the most notables in the room today with pros like Adam Levy, Tony Ruberto, Chino Rheem, and Matt Giannetti participating. None of them advanced to Day 2 as one of the 11 survivors remaining. The money bubble will burst tomorrow when nine remain and it should happen pretty soon after they return at 1 p.m. ET. Chris Karambinis will be the chip leader when cards get into the air with a stack worth 244,000.

Event 3 ($240 turbo no-limit hold’em – $25,000 guaranteed) lived up to its name and finished quickly on Sunday. The final eight players made the end even faster when they decided to chop the remaining prize pool eight ways after the elimination of Nancy Birnbaum in ninth place. The eight players took home $4,927 and Stephen Cardarelli was named the champion of the tournament. The tournament attracted a total field of 249 players and created a prize pool just under $50,000.

Event 4 ($240 Seven-Card Stud – $5,000 guaranteed) attracted a field of 41 players and 14 of them decided to stop playing at 11 p.m. on Sunday so they could return at 3 p.m. on Monday to play down to a champion. Ylon Schwartz is among the survivors and the chip leader going into Day 2 is Peter Cleven with 66,500. The top five will make the money and get a piece of the prize pool worth $8,200.

Event 5 ($240 bounty no-limit hold’em – $20,000 guaranteed) was the straggler tonight, ending at 3 a.m. The 10 survivors will return at 3 p.m. on Monday and play down to a champion. The money bubble burst when 27 players remained tonight, and then the players started to stake their claim to the $25,200 prize pool. Alexis Carrasquillo is the chip leader with 390,000.

Event 5: Day 1 Ends with 10 Players

Event 5 ($240 bounty no-limit hold’em) has come to a close with the final 10 players remaining from an initial field of 252. They will return at 3 p.m. ET on Monday and play down to a champion. Here is a look at the chip stacks they will come back to when play starts back up.

Event 1: 20 Players Left With 20 Minutes Left

There are 20 players remaining with 20 minutes left in Day 2 of Event 1 ($350 No-Limit Hold’em). The average chip stack is about 3.4 million, which is worth about 37 big blinds.

Kevin Ho leads the field late with nearly seven million, but there are several players he’ll need to hold off to finish with the end-of-day chip lead.

Here’s a look at the top of the leaderboard late in the last level of the day:

1. Kevin Ho – 6,970,000 (77 bb)
2. Zack Goodman – 5,725,000 (63 bb)
3. Mike Chiappetta – 5,500,000 (61 bb)
4. Derek Buonano – 4,900,000 (54 bb)
5. Kane Kalas – 4,650,000 (51 bb)

One of the more interesting stories since the money bubble has been Mike Beasley, who was cut short in an aces-vs.-queens situation, but has held tough since then.

Beasley has pointed out that when he won the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em event at the 2010 Borgata Winter Open, he struggled with fewer than 15 big blinds all the way from 41 players remaining to reach the final three. Beasley says that if he did it once, he can do it again.

Beasley has been on a similar trajectory today, and he’s hoping that this tournament has a similar conclusion for him.

Event 4: Day 1 Ends with 14 Players

The final 14 players remaining from the initial field of 41 in Event 4 ($240 Seven-Card Stud) have chosen to halt play and return on Monday, August 12 at 3 p.m. The money bubble will burst when five remain. Here is a look at the chips counts when the field takes their seats again.

1: Peter Cleven – 66,500
2: Kevin Painter – 47,400
3: Debra Jorgensen – 39,800
4: Sergio Corominas – 34,700
5: Roberto Marin – 34,400
6: Jeremy Jennings – 33,800
7: Ylon Schwartz – 18,700
8: Christian Ivens – 14,400
9: Barbara Gierum – 13,400
10: Jordan Chizick – 9,300
11: Al Green – 6,200
12: Stuart Breakstone – 6,100
13: David Prager – 5,400
14: Dan D’Eugenio – 4,600

Event 1: Mike Chiappetta Leads the Final 26

When the field in Event 1 ($350 No-Limit Hold’em) reached the final three tables, there was a redraw for the entire field. With 26 players remaining, the average chip stack is about 2.6 million (about 32 big blinds).

Mike Beasley  –  1,100,000  (15 bb)
Michael Tait  –  1,000,000  (14 bb)

Daniel Navarrete moved into second on the leaderboard after eliminating Pedro Rios. They had gotten it all in preflop with Navarrete’s pocket aces dominating the pocket nines of Rios. The board brought quad fours (Q-4-4-4-4), and Navarette won the pot with one of his aces as the kicker.

Action will continue tonight until the field reaches the final table (very unlikely) or the end of Level 31 (about 2:35 am EDT).

Show Me The Money

All three of the preliminary events are closing in on the money as we pass the witching hour at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open. Event 2 ($1,100 no-limit hold’em) has 18 players remaining and nine will make the money, Event 4 ($240 Seven-Card Stud) has 14 players remaining and five will get paid, although they have chosen to halt play until 3 p.m. on Monday; and Event 5 ($240 bounty no-limit hold’em) is right on the money bubble with 28 players remaining.

Event 1: Derek Buonano Leads the Final 44

The action is happening so fast that it’s difficult to keep up. In less time than it takes to walk thru the field to identify the chipleaders, two entire tables have been broken.

With 44 players remaining, the average chip stack is about 1.54 million. With blinds at 30,000-60,000 and a 10,000 ante, the average stack is worth about 25 big blinds.
