(Hollywood, FL) — Geddes Cooper claimed victory in the premier event of the 2017 Deep Stack Series at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood Monday night. The $1,650 buy-in “Deepest Stack” tournament saw Cooper come out on top of a 465-entry field to earn the lion’s share of the massive $697,500 prize pool following a three-way chop. Cooper pocketed $112,771 along with the trophy, while James Dorrance went down second for $104,625 and local grinder Haim Toorgeman third for $80,653.
- 1st: Geddes Cooper – $112,771 + Trophy
- 2nd: James Dorrance – $104,625
- 3rd: Haim Toorgeman – $80,653
“[The][Deepest][Stack] is my favorite tournament,” Cooper said. “This tournament I really, really wanted to play. I ran pretty good and I’m happy about that. That’s about all you can do.”
Cooper was born in Kingston, Jamaica but now resides in Pembroke Pines. He is a 35-year-old semi-professional poker player and his win Monday night marks his largest by a margin.
“The harder and harder they get, the more I realize how hard it is to win a tournament because everyone’s good,” Cooper said. “You have to dodge a million bullets and fade a million different things. Every time you do win a tournament, you have to cherish it.”
The $1,650 Deepest Stack ran as part of the 2017 Deep Stack Series. There were seven primary events, three of which were the headliners — Event 1, a $350 buy-in, $150,000 guaranteed “Deep Stack,” Event 3, a $560 buy-in, $150,000 guaranteed “Deeper Stack” and Event 4, the $1,650 buy-in, $300,000 guaranteed “Deepest Stack.” All events boasted the same blind levels (40, 60 and 90 minutes) but were differentiated by their starting stacks — 30,000, 40,000 and 50,000 respectively.
After a stellar turnout in 2016 saw 367 entries pony up $1,650, this year’s event blew doors off the Seminole Hard Rock drawing 465 marking a year-over-year attendance increase of more than 26 percent. The event had no shortage of notables including World Poker Tour Season XV Player of the Year Ben Zamani and recent PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker Main Event champion Harrison Gimbel, both of whom cashed.
With the stars in his wake, it was Cooper who stole the show at the Seminole Hard Rock. He ran hot at the final table eliminating Seminole Hard Rock Tampa ambassador Wally Maddah fifth Matthew Zimmerman fourth before taking the chip lead into three-handed play.
When asked what he’d take away from the event, Cooper was succinct.
“112K,” he said.
The conclusion of the Deepest Stack marks the end of the 2017 Deep Stack Series at Seminole Hard Rock. Next up is the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open August 3-15 followed by the property’s first-ever World Series of Poker Circuit event slated September 21-October 2.
