Flight 1A jumped over the 200 entrant mark before they moved into the noon hour and 230 are in the game midway through Level 3. A nice way to kick things off on a weekday morning and it bodes well for the rest of the starting flights.

Jeff Kessler was unable to run up his first bullet after his bad beat but took another seat in the game. Other regulars in early action include Jorge Gomez, Steven Bennett, Scott Efron, and Raymond Ruszkowski.

We generally don’t see anyone getting too frisky early in these big events but a former Seminole Hard Rock Poker champ didn’t waste anytime.

Jeff Kessler is back with us this series and took his seat as a late registrant. He went big on his first hand after mixing it up with AsKc against an aggressive opponent. The chips went in the middle after the 7s6h2s flop and Kessler was looking good for the insta-double against AhQd.

The 5h turn was harmless but the Qc river was unkind. He was left with a short stack but still grinding away. Kessler has two titles to his name including the Seminole Hard Rock “Rock ‘N’ Roll Poker Open” Seniors title in 2013.

Event 1 Day 1A: Time to Roll

Level 1: 25/50

2015 RRPO TrophyThe ballroom has been quiet long enough and it’s time to fire up the next major Seminole Hard Rock Poker series. Now it’s time to close out 2015 with the Seminole Hard Rock “Rock ‘N’ Roll Poker Open”.

The series will run 14 main tournaments along with a full slate of secondary events and satellites. Everything will build up to the Championship event on November 28 with a $2 Million guaranteed prize pool.

That game is more than a week away and there are some big events leading towards it starting with today’s opening flight of Event 1. Each series kicks off with a huge, multi-day tournament and this time is no different. Event 1 has a $350 buy-in and the prize pool is guaranteed to be at least $500,000 when all is done.

The tournament has six flights with 11am and 6pm starting times over the next three days. Everyone who bags chips at the end of Day 1 will move on to Sunday action with some nice money on the line.

Event 1 players begin with 20,000 stacks and grind 30-minute levels throughout the day. Late registration and unlimited re-entries are available until the start of Level 9, approximately 3:30pm. They will continue to play down until the end of Level 14 when the survivors will be set for Sunday.

Players are starting to take their seats and should be underway at the top of the hour.

Recap:

Event 1 was such a big success that it took an extra day of action to determine a winner. After 15 players returned for Day 3, it was local grinder Jorge Gomez capturing his first major Seminole Hard Rock Poker title along with $85,832 after the final table made a deal.

The first event of the 2015 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open drew 2,906 entrants over the six starting flights and it attracted plenty of top names from South Florida and around the world.  Just a few of those included Sheddy Siddiqui, Stewart Newman, Jessica Dawley, and Stuart Paterson along with WSOP bracelet winner Jason Young, Jacqueline Scott, and Marsha Wolak.

Those six flights saw a total 574 players returning for Day 2 where they hit the money bubble more than three hours into play with 250 getting paid out of the $871,800 prize pool. Once they were in the money, it was a steady stream of players to the payout desk to grab their money.

The second day wasn’t enough to whittle the field down to a winner and 15 returned for some bonus poker. Dustin Murphy returned with a huge chip lead but the blinds were climbing. Jonathan Ulrich quickly exited the final table followed by Tuyen Le.

Players at that point decided the risk was too great, with blinds at 125,000/250,000/25 Ante and going up, to gamble further and they made the uncommon move to chop of the remaining $477,775 in prize money between the last seven players.

The calculations were based on chip counts and Jorge Gomez was the top man at that point, not much further ahead than Murphy but it was good enough for the top prize, trophy, and custom-framed winner photo from IMPDI.

“This is my home casino,” Gomez said, “This is where I play and all the tournaments.”

Congratulations to Gomez on his title and great start to the series.

$350 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 34: 125,000/250,000/25,000 Ante

Tuyen Le took his turn at the bottom of the chip counts with Ulrich’s elimination and put his last 800,000 in the middle from early position. Action folded around before Jorge Gomez and Robert Aron called in the blinds.

The two live players checked it down until the board read Ks9c6hAhJs and Gomez bet 1,400,000. Aron kept shaking his head before eventually folding to see Gomez’ nuts QsTs.

Le was far behind with 8c7c to go out in 8th place for $18,308.

Event 1: Jonathan Ulrich – 9th Place ($13,077)

$350 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 34: 125,000/250,000/25,000 Ante

Jonathan Ulrich was sitting around patiently, biding his time with a short stack, as he laddered up courtesy of the early KOs.

He took a shot once he made the final table with a shove for exactly 2,000,000 from the cutoff with ThTd and Viorel Chelariu called in the big blind with AsQc. Ulrich didn’t have to wait long to see how he would make out in the race when the dealer put an ace in the window on the Ah5d4d flop.

There was no saving card on the 6h turn or Qh river and the former chip leader was gone in 9th place for $13,077.

Event 1: Chris Boegler – 10th Place ($8,718)

$350 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 34: 125,000/250,000/25,000 Ante

No sooner had the players arranged themselves at the final table we had Chris Boegler taking a standing with his short stack.

He moved all-in from the cutoff for 1,325,000 and Michael Morton called on the button along with Jorge Gomez in the big blind. Morton and Gomez checked the Qs8d4s flop and Gomez led out after the 3s turn.

Morton let his hand go and Gomez showed top pair KsQc to get “I’m drawing dead” from Boegler. He showed KdJd and had zero river outs to exit Event 1 in 10th place for $8,718.

Event 1: Steed Simmons – 11th Place ($8,718)

$350 Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em (Re-Entry)
Level 33: 100,000/200,000/25,000 Ante

While Amrooei was going out on Table 3, Steed Simmons was up against a decision on Table 4. The board was reading Jh6h6c and Jorge Gomez put him all-in for his Steed’s few remaining chips.

He called with the flush draw Kh9h and was still good against Gomez’ 7h5h. Simmons dodged the Qs but the unlucky 7d river sent him out in 11th place to set the final table.
